Australian furniture manufacturing has declined for three decades as production moved offshore. Industry 5.0 offers a route back, not by automating people out, but by pairing machine precision with human judgement. The Sundowner argues that case as a swivelling lounge chair built entirely from Australian materials: a continuous laminated Tasmanian Oak shell, BlueScope steel base, Merino wool upholstery over Dunlop latex foam, brass fasteners throughout.

Its defining mechanism is a three-arm cradle. Two arms pivot the shell on brass pins; a third, free-floating arm acts as a leaf spring, flexing under load for weight-responsive recline. No gas struts, no sealed cartridges, no permanent adhesives. Every part is replaceable, and the whole chair disassembles with hand tools.

The manufacturing thread runs through every process. Nine plies of Tasmanian Oak are cold-pressed in CNC moulds, with a robot laying adhesive and a human selecting grain. Five-axis CNC routing trims the shell and cuts compound-angle pivot pockets a three-axis machine cannot reach, validated by a human against the digital twin. Robotic MIG welds the steel base and a human certifies each weld; electrostatic powder coating is followed by hand upholstery, the most human-intensive step. Robots handle repetition; humans handle judgement.
